LCP Honors Student Athletes

On May 10, 2024, the La Cañada Preparatory Athletic Department hosted its annual awards banquet in the Foothill Intermediate School gymnasium for the 140 student-athletes, family and friends who were in attendance.
LCP Athletic Director Coach Scott gave the opening remarks during which he discussed the current state of the LCP program and the state of the sports leagues of which LCP is a member. 

“I am happy to say that the state of our athletic program is the best it has ever been.  104 individual students put on at least one LCP jersey this year to compete.  That is amazing.” Coach Scott told those in attendance.

Coach went on to say, “The league is hopeful to add six more schools to the league roster next year: Pilgrim, LA International, Sequoyah, Waverly, Foothill Oaks and Alverno Heights.”

Coach Scott concluded by saying that, “At the end of their athletic careers, we hope [students] are capable of competing at the next level in sports, but more importantly, we hope they walk away from LCP as better people and better students.”

Coach Scott then segued into the awards portion of the night by informing all in attendance that before he could introduce fall sports, there was some unfinished business from the previous spring season: a girls’ soccer championship.

Three Lady Knight soccer players from last year’s team, Anahit Abramian, Emma McDavid and Julia Yen, presented the 2023 Foothill Sports League championship trophy and banner to Miss Terry, Mr. Justin and the school.

Coach Scott then announced the first team to be recognized, Coach Greg and the 2023 flag football team.

Coach Greg gave a brief synopsis of the season and presented medals to all the varsity players and special trophies to the following:
  • Most Improved Player to Gu Cordara;
  • Most Outstanding Sportsmanship to Hovik Agazaryan; and
  • Most Outstanding Player award to Andre Gazarian.
Coach Scott introduced Coach Tosh and the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, stating that this year marked the team’s twelfth league championship overall (eighth in a row).

Coach Tosh gave a brief synopsis of the tennis season then presented medals to all the varsity players and special trophies to the following:
  • Most Improved Players to Marie Arzumanyan (girls) and Raphael Kaplan (boys);
  • Most Outstanding Sportsmanship to Alexandra Oganesyan (girls) and Michael Mkrtchian (boys); and
  • Most Outstanding Player to Elena Markov (girls) and Pavel Markov & Yash Jaju (boys).
Current Knight’s tennis captains, Yash Jaju and Elena Markov, presented the 2023 Foothill Tennis League championship trophy and banner to Miss Terry, Mr. Justin and the school.

Coach Scott introduced Coach Jill and the 2023 volleyball team with a story of the 2023 Lady Knight’s absolute dominance this year, going 9-0 and dropping only one set during the season.  The Lady Knights are currently on a 21-match unbeaten streak dating back to October 2022.

Coach Jill gave a synopsis of the season and then presented medals to all the JV and varsity players and special trophies to the following:
  • Most Improved Player to Choe Dehnoushi;
  • Most Outstanding Sportsmanship to Melania Harutunians; and
  • Most Outstanding Player to Talia Mardrusian. 
Lady Knight’s volleyball captains, Chloe Dehnoushi, Larisa Minasyan and Talia Mardrusian, presented the 2023 Foothill Sports League championship trophy and banner to Miss Terry, Mr. Justin and the school.

Coach Scott presented the Foothill Sports League Most Valuable Player award in volleyball to Talia Mardrusian.

Coach Scott introduced boys’ and girls’ basketball teams with a summary of their seasons.

Coach Greg presented medals to the junior varsity girls’ and boys’ and varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. Coach Greg also presented special trophies to the following:
  • Most Improved Players to Leonna Torosyan (girls) and Dante Vartanian (boys);
  • Most Outstanding Sportsmanship to Eva Margaryan (girls) and David Marjik (boys); and
  • Most Outstanding Players to Camille Danoukh (girls) and Andre Gazarian (boys).
Lady Knight’s basketball captains, Camille Danoukh, Maneh Khudyan and Leonna Torosyan, presented the 2024 Foothill Sports League championship trophy and banner to Miss Terry, Mr. Justin and the school.

Coach Scott presented the Foothill Sports League Most Valuable Player award in girls’ basketball to Camille Danoukh.

Coach Scott introduced the coed soccer teams, and Coach Greg presented medals.

Coach Scott concluded the awards ceremony by presenting the final awards of the evening.
Emma McDavid, Pavel Markov, Yash Jaju, Giuliana Mirzaians, Elena Markov, Raphael Kaplan, Andre Gazarian, Dante Vartanian, Camille Danoukh, Melania Harutunians, and Leila Morvarid were recognized as three-year varsity lettermen with engraved plaques.

Coach Scott presented the Athletic Director Award to Dante Vartanian.  Dante received this award for his exemplification of the sports program motto “Gentleman/Lady, Scholar, Athlete” and his outstanding contribution to the program over his three-year career.

Coach Scott presented the Female Athlete of the Year trophy to Emma McDavid for her outstanding performance on the volleyball, basketball and soccer teams, and her outstanding contribution to the program.

Coach Scott presented the Male Athlete of the Year trophy to Andre Gazarian for his outstanding performance on the flag football and basketball teams, and his outstanding contribution to the program.

Miss Terry and Mr. Justin closed the evening by thanking the coaching staff and the athletic department for their dedication to the program, and all the parents for their support.
