La Canada Preparatory defeated The Gooden School in straight sets to win a second consecutive Foothill Sports League title in girls’ volleyball.
LCP dropped only one set on their way to a perfect 11-0 season. Lead by eighth-grade captains, Chloe Dehnoushi, Talia Mardrussian and Larisa Minasyan, the Lady Knights amassed a nineteen-game win streak going back to the start of last season. The championship game was held in front of a full house at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s gym on November 30.
In the first set, Gooden came out fast, going up 10-5 then 18-14 before LCP’s Emma McDavid went on a six-point serving spree to put the Lady Knights ahead to stay. LCP held on to take the first set 25-23. In the second set behind the dominant serving of Dehnoushi, the Lady Knights jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back, easily winning the second set 25-12 to bring home the championship.
“The first set almost gave me a heart attack,” said second-year coach Jill Jose. “That was the toughest set we’d played all season. I feel really fortunate that we managed to come out on top of that one. It would’ve been a completely different match if we hadn’t.”
Following the match, the Foothill Sports League named Mardrussian the league’s Most Valuable Player for 2023.
Congratulations to Coach Jill and the 2023 Lady Knights!
